About Bath Preservation Trust

The Bath Preservation Trust (BPT) is dedicated to campaigning for and promoting the conservation, sustainable enhancement, and celebration of the unique and historic City of Bath as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our Mission

Founded in 1934, BPT has worked tirelessly to protect Bath’s architectural heritage, advocate for sustainable development, and foster appreciation for its historical significance. With over 1,000 members, we have saved hundreds of listed buildings from demolition, improved the public realm, and influenced new developments for the better.

Bath is a city of exceptional beauty and heritage, encircled by stunning countryside and bisected by the River Avon. It boasts rich architecture, a thriving economy, and engaged communities. We envision a future where Bath adapts to climate change, embraces sustainable design-led development, and maintains its reputation as a vibrant, living heritage city.

Our Values and Work

BPT believes that Bath deserves excellence in design and sustainable development that enhances social and economic opportunities without compromising its unparalleled built heritage and natural environment. We work independently and alongside partners to:

  • Advocate for sustainable development and highlight the value of heritage in a changing world.
  • Campaign for an improved public realm, a healthier environment, and a thriving living city.
  • Promote forward-thinking, sustainable architecture and design worthy of Bath’s World Heritage status.
  • Provide learning opportunities for people of all ages, supporting personal wellbeing and social inclusion.

At our core, we seek positive solutions to the challenges Bath faces today and in the future. Each year, our expert volunteers review over 200 planning applications, engage with local authorities and developers, and provide informed advice on proposals for historic homes and listed buildings.

Museums and Education

BPT plays a vital role in Bath’s tourism economy. We manage four museums that provide educational opportunities and cultural experiences:

  • No. 1 Royal Crescent – A fascinating insight into Georgian life.
  • Museum of Bath Architecture – Exploring the city’s architectural history.
  • Beckford’s Tower and Landscape – Discovering the intriguing legacy of William Beckford.
  • Herschel Museum of Astronomy – Celebrating the discoveries of William Herschel.

Funding and Governance

The Bath Preservation Trust is an independent charity registered in England & Wales. We operate as a company limited by guarantee, overseen by a voluntary Chairman and a board of Trustees. With careful financial management, BPT remains self-sufficient and independent—an unusual and privileged position for a UK heritage organisation. Donations to support our work are always welcomed.
